healthy relationships

If you have been diagnosed with ALS or know someone who has, you might be curious if you qualify for a Medicare approved hospice benefit. Although hospice care is not the same thing as giving up, patients with ALS are not eligible for experimental trials. However, it is possible to receive support through hospice. Here's some information about hospice. It is important to have a plan in place to make sure you are comfortable with your choice.

ALS, a neurodegenerative and degenerative disease, is a common diagnosis.

ALS is a fatal, progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects your motor neurons. Although the exact cause is unknown at this time, it is believed to be caused by a malfunction of molecular systems. This includes protein balance, folding, excessive stimulation of motor neurons, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and mitochondria dysfunction. These abnormal molecular mechanism damage motor neurons, causing their death. Although many factors can lead to ALS, these are only a part of the picture.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a hereditary condition that causes motor neuron death. About 10% people with ALS have a mutation of the SOD1 genome. The number of people with ALS may be higher in certain individuals. SOD1 is the enzyme responsible for removing superoxide radicals toxic to cells. In the case of ALS, the mutations in the SOD1 gene can cause the disease.

Hospice care might be an option for patients suffering from ALS.

Other illnesses, such as co-morbidities and secondary diseases, can often be accompanied by ALS. ALS, an inherited neurodegenerative condition, can limit a person's ability to move or breathe. A patient with ALS may require artificial feeding or ventilation. These treatments can delay the onset of death by six months or more. Hospice care is not available to patients who are unable or unable to manage their symptoms.

There are currently no universal criteria to determine if a patient suffering from ALS is eligible for hospice. Patients should have a minimum six-month life expectancy, and be diagnosed by a physician. However, people suffering from ALS may be able to access hospice care earlier. Hospice care may be available in the patient's own home, at a nursing facility, or at the home of their caregivers. There are many options available to ALS patients.

Medicare may not cover hospice care for patients.

Medicare and Medicaid both cover hospice care costs on a per-diem base. The cost of hospice care generally includes medications, equipment, as well as services related to ALS. Hospice also covers a hospital bed and BiPAP or cough-assist devices. Hospice does not cover certain equipment such as the power wheelchair and most computer-based communication equipment. If a patient is unable to get Medicare coverage, they may have to pay out-of-pocket for these.

Patients may be able to access their own resources and information before going into hospice. Riluzole, a more expensive medication, may be prescribed in order to slow the progression. However, it has very limited benefits for those with ALS. Patients should consider Riluzole if they have an option. Medicare coverage may be available to patients, but they must meet some requirements.

It is possible that patients will not be able take part in the experimental trials

Patients with life-threatening illnesses have the right to access experimental treatments through The Right to Try Act. In 2005, President Obama signed the act. It is known as the Trickett Wendler Right to Try Act. It was created to enable patients with life-threatening illnesses to access new treatments. It is still not known if these experimental trials will prove effective for ALS patients.
